Managers Update: Fall 2011
Fall is here and temperatures have dropped significantly, slowing down mosquito activity for the remainder of 2011. This time of year tends to bring cooler days which suppress the populations of the major West Nile virus vectors.
Though we are having cooler weather, it is possible for warm temperatures to return and it is important that you continue to perform sound mosquito management techniques such as draining all standing water around your home and wearing an effective mosquito repellent, especially during early morning and evening walks or if you are practicing any outside sports. We urge you to apply repellent if you are outside during dawn and dusk, which are the peak times for mosquito activity. The District has free repellent available to the public and willingly gives it out to interested sports groups, community organizations or neighborhood associations hosting evening events. Please contact us if you are interested in obtaining free repellent wipes.
Our Public Information and Education Department is currently distributing 2012 Fight the Bite calendars that feature the winning entries of our spring 2011 Fight the Bite calendar contest. If you would like a free calendar please give us a call. Presentations on mosquito and West Nile virus prevention are also available for your school, community or neighborhood group. Our website makes it easy to request a presentation or any of our other services which include reporting a neglected pool, free mosquitofish for your pool or pond and a home service inspection. You may also stay updated on District activities and interesting information by becoming a friend on Facebook or following us on Twitter.
