Spring 2013 Fight the Bite Contest Winners Announced
SPRING 2013 FIGHT THE BITE CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Elk Grove, Calif.— As part of Mosquito Awareness Week the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announces the winners of the 2013 annual Fight the Bite Contest for students in grades K-12. In an effort to teach children about mosquito prevention, the contest encourages kids to use art and creatively design a calendar page promoting the FIGHT the BITE theme to inspire everyone to practice any or all of the District 7 D’s of Mosquito Prevention. “This year we received more than 3300 entries and we are very impressed by the quality of the artwork submitted” said David Brown, District Manager. “The children are very talented and creative. We’re happy to know they can use art to convey the important message of protecting our community from mosquitoes and West Nile virus” said Brown.
Students were divided into three grade categories: K-3, 4-6 and 7-12. The winning entries were based on: creativity, originality and the ability to effectively communicate one or more of the District D’s of Mosquito Prevention. Winners were determined by a panel of judges and will receive a cash prize. The three first place contest winners will also record a radio commercial with a mosquito prevention message that will air throughout the summer. Since many area schools are struggling with budget cuts, prizes will also be awarded to the school of each winning student for educational materials. All winning contest entries will be used in the 2014 Fight the Bite calendar which will be distributed later this year.
First place winners are:
K-3 Damion Saechao from Elder Creek Elementary in Sacramento
