2016 Fight The Bite Contest Winners

Elk Grove, Ca.— As part of Mosquito and West Nile Virus Awareness Week the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District is happy to announce the winners of the 2016 Fight the Bite Contest for students in grades K-12. In an effort to teach children about mosquito prevention, the contest encourages kids to use art and promote the FIGHT the BITE theme to inspire everyone to prevent mosquitoes by practicing key messages such as draining standing water and using mosquito repellent. “The quality of the artwork submitted is very impressive” said Gary Goodman, District Manager. This year as part of the District’s 70th anniversary, children also had the option of drawing a commemorative logo for the 70 years of service and entries had to include the tagline Celebrating 70 Years of Protecting our Community. “The children are very talented and creative. We’re happy to know they can use art to convey the important message of protecting our community from mosquitoes and West Nile virus” added Goodman.

Students were divided into three grade categories: K-3, 4-6 and 7-12. The winning entries were based on: creativity, originality, the ability to communicate the District D’s of Mosquito Prevention or design a logo in honor of the 70 years of service. Twelve winners were selected by a panel of judges and the three first place winners will receive a surprise visit to their school and a cash prize. Since many area schools are struggling with budget cuts, prizes will also be awarded to the school of each winning student for educational materials.
