Managers Update

We’re enjoying the last weeks of summer; however this doesn’t mean that we’ve come to the end of the mosquito season. Mosquitoes and West Nile virus are still present and active in our area, with numerous mosquito samples and birds demonstrating infection. This means the risk of becoming infected with the disease is still real and that we all need to be proactive to ensure we stay protected.

As many enjoy the cool evenings and children engage in after school sports, remember to put on a good repellent. There are many varieties of repellents—lotions, sprays, oils, and wipes. We encourage you to find one that works for you and wear it every time you go outside when mosquitoes are active. The most important thing to look for is the percent of the active ingredient. The higher the percentage, the longer the protection it provides. If you need more information on repellents or have any questions, please visit the Centers for Disease Control page. The District has free repellent available to the public and willingly gives it out to interested sports groups, community organizations or neighborhood associations hosting evening events. Please contact us if you are interested in obtaining your free repellent wipes.

Our Public Information and Education Department is currently distributing 2011 Fight the Bite calendars that feature the winning entries of our Spring 2010 Fight the Bite calendar contestwinners. If you would like a free calendar please give us a call. Presentations on mosquito and West Nile virus prevention are also available for your school, community or neighborhood group. Please visit us at www.FIGHTtheBITE.net to request a presentation or any of our other services which include free mosquitofish for your pool or pond and a home service inspection. You may also stay updated on District activities and interesting information by becoming a friend on Facebook or following us on Twitter.

As we move through the rest of the 2010 mosquito season, please remember that we are committed to bring you quality services year round. We are here to serve you and protect public health. Together, we can ensure a safe, healthy environment for everyone.

If you have any questions regarding our services, please call us at 1-800-429-1022 or visit www.FIGHTtheBITE.net.

RISK OF WEST NILE VIRUS CONTINUES

–Protect Yourself from Mosquitoes this Labor Day Weekend

Elk Grove, Calif.— Labor Day is the last holiday of the summer, however with the warm temperatures of recent days, this doesn’t mean it’s the end of mosquito season! This weekend many will be enjoying family barbeques, pool parties and fun outdoor activities, however the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito &Vector Control District reminds residents of the threat for contracting West Nile virus and the need to stay protected. “We’re still seeing high numbers of infected mosquito samples throughout Sacramento and Yolo counties” said David Brown, District Manager. “This means that that the risk of becoming infected is still real and we can’t let our guard down. We all have to protect ourselves with an effective repellent when we’re outdoors”, said Brown.

Though this has been an unseasonably cool summer, there has been constant virus activity, especially in Sacramento County. “We’ve seen many infected birds and mosquito samples this year” said Brown “We still have a few weeks before the summer season officially ends and with the abundance of mosquitoes we’re still seeing, it’s very important that everyone be proactive and stay protected, especially as we head into the holiday weekend.” To date, there are 5 human West Nile virus cases in Sacramento County and 34 throughout the state mainly in Central and Southern California. In 2009, 4 deaths and 112 human cases were reported.

–Personal Protection is Key in Preventing Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District is giving away boxes of mosquito repellent towelettes, while supplies last, to communities engaging in outdoor activities in honor of National Night Out next Tuesday, August 3rd. The event focuses on crime and drug prevention and many neighborhoods come together for outdoor social gatherings during times of peak mosquito activity. “We know many people will be outside for this event and we want to remind the public that personal protection against mosquitoes continues to be key in the prevention of West Nile virus” said David Brown, District Manager. “We encourage the public to take advantage of the free repellent we are offering”. The repellent, Deep Woods OFF, with the active ingredient DEET, comes in small boxes and is available for pick up from the two District offices in Elk Grove and Woodland.

In recent weeks, many infected birds and mosquito samples have been found in various areas of both Sacramento and Yolo counties. The District urges the public to protect themselves from mosquito bites when they are outdoors. “Repellent comes in a variety of forms: lotions, sprays, towelettes and powders. The most important thing is to apply it to ensure you and your family are not bitten” said Brown. Repellent should be applied based on duration and type of activity. Sweat will make the repellent wear off faster, and people engaging in physical activity will likely need to apply repellent more often. Residents should always follow the directions on the repellent’s label. Brown reminds everyone to think about repellent as often as they might think about sunscreen when outdoors during the summer.

For anyone interested in getting the free repellent, please email lrodriguez@FIGHTtheBITE.net to schedule a pick up time during normal business hours Monday-Friday, 7:00a.m. to 3:30p.m.

–Aerial Treatment in North Sacramento County and a Small Portion of Placer County will begin Tuesday

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo and Placer Mosquito Control Districts announced today that aerial spraying to control mosquitoes that may carry the potentially fatal West Nile virus is scheduled for areas of North Sacramento county and a small portion of Placer County. If weather permits, aerial spraying utilizing two planes will be conducted over three consecutive nights beginning Tuesday, July 27th between 8:00 pm and midnight. “We’re very concerned about the high number of infected mosquito samples and dead birds found in this area” said David Brown District Manager. “The number of mosquitoes and virus infection rates continue to be high and we need to take immediate action to reduce risk of human infections” said Brown. With National Night Out scheduled for next week, many will be engaging in outdoor activities and aerial spraying is deemed necessary in order to protect public health and decrease the risk of West Nile virus. In the last couple of weeks, WNV activity has intensified throughout the state and currently there are four confirmed human cases, three of them from Stanislaus County and the other from Kern County.

A small portion of the area to be treated is in Placer County and both Districts are coordinating efforts to address the West Nile virus hot spots that lie on both sides of the Sacramento-Placer border. “This is a great opportunity for our Districts to coordinate and share resources,” said Joel Buettner, General Manager of the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District “We want to ensure that all residents are protected, since neither mosquitoes nor West Nile virus recognize county borders.” said Buettner.

The area that will be treated is approximately 35,000 acres (see the attached maps for exact areas in both counties). The material that will be used is Evergreen 60-6, the same pyrethrin based product used in previous treatments. This material is registered for use in mosquito control by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District has been monitoring areas of North Sacramento county where many mosquito samples and dead birds have tested positive for West Nile virus. “We are keeping a close eye on this area because over the past week virus activity has intensified” said David Brown, District Manager. “If infection rates continue to be high, we will consider doing aerial spraying in order to interrupt the virus transmission cycle and ensure public health” said Brown.

The District will continue to do mosquito trapping and testing to determine if aerial spraying will be necessary. In the meantime, cooperation from the public is needed ”If you’re going to be outside when mosquitoes are active, please don’t take any chances and protect yourself by wearing mosquito repellent, this will go a long way in preventing mosquito bites,” said Brown.

The area being evaluated is approximately 45,000 acres of North Sacramento from the Sacramento/Placer county line on the north, to Fair Oaks Blvd and Grand Ave on the South and from the railroad tracks near the east levee drainage canal on the west to Sunrise Blvd on the east (see the attached map). If aerial spraying is necessary, the product that will be used is Evergreen 60-6, an insecticide approved for use in mosquito control by the Environmental Protection Agency and the same material used in previous treatments.

MOSQUITO CONTROL MOVES FORWARD WITH PLANS FOR AERIAL SPRAYING

Treatment for Adult Mosquitoes in High Risk Areas Begins Tuesday Night

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announced today that aerial treatment for adult mosquitoes that may carry the potentially fatal West Nile virus is scheduled for two consecutive nights beginning Tuesday, July 13th from approximately 8:00 pm to midnight over areas of concern in South Sacramento. “Our surveillance efforts indicate high infection rates and that aerial treatments to reduce the number of infected adult mosquitoes are necessary in order to protect public health” said David Brown, District Manager.

Over the last few weeks high temperatures have amplified the virus and many infected mosquito samples and birds have been found. Approximately 37,000 acres of South Sacramento from Elder Creek Road down to Elk Grove Blvd and from Franklin Blvd to Excelsior Road will be treated with Evergreen 60-6, an insecticide registered for use in mosquito control by the US Environmental Protection Agency. This is the same material that has been used in previous treatments. While attempts are made to notify the public, the District may postpone or cancel a scheduled treatment due to weather and/or other reasons. For additional details including a map of the treatment area, information on Evergreen 60-6, or to sign up for Spray Notifications, please visit www.FIGHTtheBITE.net.

CONCERNS INTENSIFY OVER MOSQUITO AND WEST NILE VIRUS ACTIVITY IN SOUTH SACRAMENTO

–Aerial spraying may be necessary

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District continues to closely monitor an area in South Sacramento for West Nile virus. Over the last couple of weeks, virus activity has increased with the finding of positive dead birds and multiple infected mosquito samples. “We’re very concerned with the high infection rates and are considering aerial spraying” said David Brown, District Manager. Though no formal decisions have been made, aerial treatments to reduce adult mosquito populations may be necessary early next week. Late spring rains and sudden hot temperatures increased the number of mosquitoes and elevated infection rates. “We know there are mosquitoes that are already infected and we need to be proactive in making sure they will not be a public health threat” said Brown. Though mosquitoes might be coming from a variety of sources, there are many neglected swimming pools in the area that could be contributing to the problem.

The area being evaluated is approximately 29,000 acres of South Sacramento from Eldercreek down to Elk Grove Blvd and from Bruceville Rd. to Excelsior (download map as PDF, or see below). If aerial spraying becomes necessary, the product that would be used is Evergreen 60-6, an insecticide approved for use in mosquito control by the Environmental Protection Agency (and the product used in previous mosquito control applications). Since there is currently a worldwide shortage of this product and the District has a limited supply, if other spray missions are necessary, other registered pesticides may be considered.

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito &Vector Control District announced today that West Nile Virus activity has spread to Yolo County. Two birds, one from Woodland and the other from West Sacramento have tested positive. “Dead birds provide valuable information and help us see how the virus is moving” said David Brown, District Manager. “Since birds are the hosts of the virus, once they test positive, we typically also see infected mosquitoes”. In addition to this new activity, concern is growing over an urban area in South Sacramento where many infected mosquito samples have also been confirmed. “We are closely monitoring this zone as the virus is amplifying quickly and we need to be ready to respond” said Brown.

The District urges the public to do their part in reducing mosquitoes and protecting themselves to decrease the chances of contracting West Nile virus. “Inspecting your yard for standing water and wearing an effective insect repellent during times of peak mosquito activity continue to be your best line of defense.” said Brown.

In response to the recent findings, the District has increased its surveillance and will conduct ground fogging around areas where positive mosquitoes and birds have been found. For current information about any treatments planned, please visit our website atwww.FIGHTtheBITE.net.
FOUR NEW MOSQUITO SAMPLES AND A BIRD TEST POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE
–The Public is Urged to Protect Themselves During the Holiday weekend

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito &Vector Control District announced that more evidence of West Nile virus activity has been detected in Sacramento County as four more mosquito samples and a bird tested positive for the disease. “Hot temperatures in recent days have accelerated the production of mosquitoes and West Nile virus is on the rise putting the public at a higher risk” said David Brown, District Manager.

The increased West Nile virus activity comes at a time when many will be enjoying the outdoors this holiday weekend and the District reminds the public to take protective measures against mosquitoes. “Many will be enjoying the weather and taking part in family BBQ’s and watching fireworks around dusk, a time when mosquitoes are most active. We urge you to wear an effective repellent to prevent mosquito bites. All it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito to get the disease,” said Brown. The Center for Disease Control recommends using an insect repellent that contains the active ingredients DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or the plant based Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

Last week 2 mosquito samples and one bird tested positive for West Nile virus in Sacramento County. Though the District has not seen any virus activity in Yolo County to date, two potential human cases are currently being investigated by the Yolo County Department of Public Health.

In response to the recent findings, the District has increased its surveillance and started ground fogging around areas where positive mosquitoes and birds have been found. For current information about any treatments planned, please visit www.FIGHTtheBITE.net. Residents may also subscribe to receive email notifications for mosquito treatments by zip code.

Managers Update

The weather is hot and mosquitoes are out! West Nile Virus (WNV) activity has started in our area and we’ve seen positive birds and mosquito samples. Such activity is a clear indication that the virus is active and that anyone can become infected. All it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito to get the disease. We urge residents to be aware and take proactive measures to protect themselves. Draining all sources of standing water around the home is critical! We remind you to please ONLY irrigate your lawns, and not the sidewalks and gutters. Water going into storm drains and basins produce mosquitoes and affect everyone in the neighborhood.

Summer is a time for BBQ’s, camping, evening walks and spending more time outside, especially in the early morning and evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. We encourage you to dress appropriately and protect yourself by wearing an effective mosquito repellent to ensure you are not bitten. The CDC encourages the use of repellents containing the active ingredients DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 and the plant based Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. As part of our Public Information and Education Campaign, the District offers free repellent to sports leagues, park and recreation departments, and community organizations for any outdoor evening events. If you would like repellent please contact our office by emailing us at info@FIGHTtheBITE.net. For more information on the use of repellent visit the CDC’s Repellent website.

Home foreclosures and neglected swimming pools continue to be a problem. While we receive daily reports of neglected swimming pools, public cooperation is still needed to ensure we treat as many pools as possible to keep residents safe. Just one neglected swimming pool can produce thousands of mosquitoes and infect an entire neighborhood! If you know of a neighbor that cannot keep their pool clean, please give us a call. District staff will add mosquitofish to the pool which will keep mosquitoes under control until the pool can be properly maintained. Please note that even with mosquitofish in the pool, the water will continue to be green and dirty until the pool is properly filtered and chemically treated. In the meantime, we urge residents NOT to add chlorine to the pool because this kills the fish and starts the mosquito production cycle again.

As summer gets underway, our commitment to help protect public health by controlling mosquitoes is our top priority. We will continue to treat mosquito sources in both urban and rural areas, our advertising campaign to educate the public will intensify, and our community outreach will be strong. Please contact us if you would like a presentation for your community group or classroom or by filling out a presentation request form online.

Together, we can ensure a safe and healthy environment for all. If you need assistance with mosquitoes please call us at 1-800-429-1022 or submit an online service request.

We are here to serve you!

FIRST TWO MOSQUITO SAMPLES TEST POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS IN SACARMENTO COUNTY

Elk Grove, Calif.—The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) received notification today that two mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The mosquito samples are the first ones to test positive this year in Sacramento County and were collected from traps in South Sacramento. “Finding the first samples of infected mosquitoes is another reminder that that the virus is active and present in our area.” said David Brown, District Manager. “Residents need to be aware and take proactive measures to protect themselves because West Nile virus is here to stay” said Brown. As temperatures continue to rise and days get longer, mosquitoes will continue to be a problem and it is very important that the public be aware and take proactive measures such as draining any sources of standing water around their home, dressing appropriately and using an effective repellent especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. As the weather gets hotter and especially with possible triple digit heat expected over the weekend, the District will continue to see increased mosquito activity.

As a response to the detection of WNV, the District will increase its mosquito trapping and surveillance in the area to find sources where mosquitoes may be breeding. Ground spraying may also be conducted to rapidly decrease the numbers of adult mosquitoes.

The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District provides year round mosquito and vector control services. The main goal for the District is to keep the public healthy by preventing the transmission of diseases and improving the quality of life for residents.

Practice the District D’s of Mosquito Prevention:

DEAD BIRD TESTS POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS
–District’s Surveillance Program Finds First Sign of Activity for 2010

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) received preliminary confirmation today that an American Crow has tested positive for West Nile virus. The bird, which was found in east Sacramento, is the first indication of WNV activity of the 2010 season. “Finding this bird is significant because it means that the virus is present in our area” said David Brown, District Manager. “Dead birds provide an early indication of where positive mosquito samples may also be found and where human cases may develop later in the season.” Late rains and mild temperatures had delayed the beginning of the mosquito and West Nile virus season, however this first positive bird is a clear warning sign that the virus continues to be active. As a response to the detection of WNV, the District will increase its mosquito trapping and surveillance in the area to find sources where mosquitoes may be breeding.

The public is encouraged to report dead birds by calling the California Department of Public Health hotline at 877-WNV-BIRD (877-968-2473). Some species of birds such as crows, jays and magpies are very susceptible to the virus and are more likely to die from the infection. Though not all birds that are called in will be picked up and tested, the reports provide valuable information and assist with mosquito surveillance and control efforts that help protect public health. Birds are hosts for WNV and mosquitoes transmit the virus by biting an infected bird and then biting a person or other animal.

This is the first sign of West Nile virus activity for the Sacramento region; however, statewide 9 other counties have already reported positive dead birds and mosquito samples.

In 2009, 4 deaths and 112 human WNV cases were reported in California.

Managers Update

The weather is warming up and we may start seeing more mosquitoes! With the higher temperatures in days to come and the summer months ahead we will all be enjoying the outdoors, which means we have to stay protected from mosquito bites and take proper precautions to protect ourselves against West Nile virus (WNV). WNV activity has started in regions throughout the state with the reporting of positive dead birds and mosquito samples. Such activity is a clear indication that the virus is active and that anyone can become infected. We urge residents to be aware and take proactive measures to protect themselves. Draining all sources of standing water around the home, especially after the late spring rains is critical! When you start irrigating your lawns, ONLY irrigate your lawns, and not the sidewalks and gutters that divert water to storm drains that can produce mosquitoes during the summer months. Starting these good water management practices now will go a long way to reducing mosquito populations as we move ahead into the warmer months of the year.

At this time of year everyone enjoys spending more time outside, especially in the early morning and evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. We encourage you to dress appropriately and wear an effective mosquito repellent to ensure you are not bitten. As part of our Public Information and Education Campaign, the District offers free repellent to sports leagues, park and recreation departments, and community organizations for any outdoor evening events. If you would like repellent please contact our office by emailing us at info@FIGHTtheBITE.net.

As the summer months get underway our commitment to serve and protect the public health of residents of Sacramento and Yolo Counties continues to be our top priority.
We will continue to treat mosquito sources in both urban and rural areas, our advertising campaign to educate the public will intensify, and our community outreach will be strong. Please contact us if you would like a presentation for your community group or classroom by filling out a presentation request form online.

Together, we can ensure a safe and healthy environment for all. If you need assistance with mosquitoes please call us at 1-800-429-1022 or submit an online service request.

If you have any questions regarding our services, please call us at 1-800-429-1022.

We are here to serve you!

SPRING 2010 FIGHT THE BITE CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

–Children learn about mosquito prevention and also earn money for their school

Elk Grove, Calif.— As part of Mosquito Awareness Week and informing the public about mosquitoes and diseases they transmit, the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announces the winners of the 2010 annual Fight the Bite Design a Calendar Page Contest for students in grades K-12. In an effort to have children learn about mosquito prevention, the contest encourages kids to use art and creatively design a page promoting the FIGHT the BITE theme to inspire everyone to practice any or all of the District 7 D’s of Mosquito Prevention. “The contest was a hit” said David Brown, District Manager. This year, the District received over 1750 entries from both counties; this is in comparison to 2009 when the District received 1,079 entries. “The kids are extremely talented and we’re delighted to see that students are engaged and understand the importance of reducing mosquitoes to prevent diseases such as West Nile virus.”

Students were divided into three grade categories: K-3, 4-8 and 9-12. The winning entries were based on: creativity, originality and the ability to effectively communicate one or more of the District D’s of prevention. Winners in each division were determined by a panel of judges and will receive a cash prize. This year, since many area schools are struggling with budget cuts, aside from prizes for individual winners, a cash prize will also be awarded to the school of each winning student. First place contest winners will also record a radio commercial that will be aired throughout the summer. All winning contest entries will be used in the 2011 District calendar and distributed at events later this year.

First place winners are:

K-3 Zalea Bjorgum from Ellen Feickert Elementary in Elk Grove

4-8 Cleary Chizmar from Sierra Oaks Elementary in Sacramento

9-12 Lika Ito from C.K McClatchy High in Sacramento

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announces Mosquito Awareness Week April 26-30. This week officially kicks off the mosquito and West Nile virus season and the Districts public education and advertising campaign to inform the public about the health risks associated with mosquitoes. “With the late rains earlier this week and the high temperatures expected over the next few days, mosquitoes will be breeding and Mosquito Awareness Week serves as a good reminder for the public to take the necessary precautions to prevent mosquitoes” said David Brown, District Manager. Stagnant water that has accumulated in back yard sources, ditches and drains is ideal for mosquito breeding. This is why the District encourages residents to take the threat of mosquitoes and West Nile virus seriously and to do their part in ensuring they are not producing mosquitoes around their home. “Preventing mosquitoes now will go a long way later in the season,” said Brown. ”Please check your yard for standing water and report any neglected pools in your neighborhood.”

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District’s annual Fight the Bite Design a Calendar page contest for local students in grades K-12 is going on now! In an effort to inform the community about mosquitoes and West Nile virus prevention, the contest encourages kids to creatively design a calendar page inspiring everyone to practice any or all of the District 7 D’s of Mosquito Prevention. “Involving the students is key to improving their knowledge about reducing mosquitoes and keeping them safe from West Nile virus,” said David Brown, District Manager. “It’s a fun way for kids to learn about an important topic and we encourage everyone to enter.”

Since many area schools are struggling with budget cuts, this year, aside from prizes for individual winners, a cash prize will also be awarded to the classrooms of the winning students. There will be three first place classroom prizes of $450.00 each, to be used on educational supplies! Fliers have been distributed through the schools and teachers are encouraged to make the contest a classroom project to get more children to participate.

Students will be divided into three grade categories: K-3, 4-8 and 9-12. Calendar pages will be based on the following criteria: creativity, originality and the ability to effectively communicate one or more of the District D’s of prevention. Winners will be determined by a panel of judges and announced during Mosquito Awareness Week in April. Winning entries will be made into a calendar and distributed at District activities.

Contest entries are due to District offices by 3:00 pm on Wednesday, March 31st. Click here for details and to download entry forms.

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District reminds the public to “drain after every rain” to prevent mosquitoes! Wet weather followed by warm temperatures can create an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, so it becomes necessary to have good water management practices around the house. “The powerful storm brought a lot of rain and we urge all residents to inspect their homes and drain any water that might have collected in buckets, cans, flowerpots, old tires or any other container around their yard” said David Brown, District Manager. “Though mosquito activity had decreased in the last few weeks, rain and warm temperatures can certainly provide appropriate conditions for mosquitoes and we need everyone to do their part” said Brown.

The excessive rains of the past few days and the fall leaves have also clogged many street storm drains creating flooding problems throughout the area. Since mosquitoes often grow in wet storm drains, the District asks all residents to their use green waste containers for all garden materials. Using the containers will prevent mosquitoes from developing in the drains and will make for cleaner, safer streets. Homeowners should also inspect their roof gutters and ensure they are free of debris because this is another area where mosquitoes can breed.

Elk Grove, Calif.— Family barbecues, the State Fair and other fun outdoor activities will be popular with area residents this weekend to celebrate Labor Day, the last holiday of the summer. Unfortunately this doesn’t mean it’s the end of the mosquito season and the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito Control District wants to remind the public of the risk of West Nile virus. “In recent days we’ve seen mosquito samples and dead birds test positive for the virus throughout different areas in both of our counties,” said David Brown District Manager. “Everyone needs to be aware that transmission of the virus is a possibility. Taking protective measures such as wearing an effective insect repellent, especially around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes that can transmit the virus are most active is necessary.”

“We’ve had a fairly mild season so far, however, we still have a few weeks before summer officially ends and all it takes is a few days of hot temperatures for the virus to amplify. We urge all residents to be proactive and protect themselves from mosquitoes especially this weekend when so many people will be out enjoying the long weekend,” said Brown.

Throughout the state, activity has been registered in 39 counties and there are 26 human cases being reported mainly in Central and Southern California.
