What is a Vector?

WNV Cycle

Many people may not know what "Vector Control" is or why it is important. A vector is an insect or any animal that transmits a disease to other animals or humans. Examples include mosquitoes, ticks, mites and fleas. Part of our work is the surveillance, monitoring and control of the vectors that carry these diseases. Additionally, we work with various agencies and institutions to educate the public on vector information and prevention techniques. Our work prevents and contains the spread of numerous vector-borne diseases, such as Encephalitis, malaria, Lyme Disease, Babesiosis, and Ehrilchiosis. For in-depth information about these diseases and their prevalance, download Vector-Borne Diseases (coming soon). For vector information please download Vectors of Concern. Be sure to find out How You Can Help our fight against vector-borne diseases.
