School Program and Curriculum Our school program educates and informs students enrolled in Sacramento County and Yolo County school districts about mosquitoes and diseases they transmit. The school program curriculum addresses topics of mosquito biology, medical significance, control and prevention of vectors. The curriculum correlates to California state content standards. Students are engaged and inspired to learn more about mosquitoes and other vectors as well as additional services the District provides. Fight the Bite Calendar Contest The annual Fight the Bite Contest is designed to inspire creativity while teaching kids the fundamentals of mosquito control and prevention. To help us educate and inform the community about mosquitoes and West Nile virus, we host the “Design a Calendar Page Contest” for students in grades K-12 every spring. Students use their creativity and art skills to draw a picture that will show us how they Fight the Bite and protect from mosquitoes using any or all of the D’s of Mosquito Prevention: DRAIN any standing water that may produce mosquitoes. DAWN and DUSK are times to avoid being outdoors. DRESS appropriately by wearing long sleeves and pants when outside. DEFEND yourself against mosquitoes by using an effective insect repellent. DOOR and window screens should be in good working condition. DISTRICT staff is available to assist with mosquito problems
