West Nile Virus Activity Increases As More Mosquito Samples and Birds Test Positive

WEST NILE VIRUS ACTIVITY INCREASES AS MORE MOSQUITO SAMPLES AND BIRDS TEST POSITIVE
 
Elk Grove, Ca— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announced today that West Nile virus (WNV) activity continues to increase after 19 mosquito samples and 19 dead birds tested positive for the virus in areas throughout Sacramento and Yolo counties. This marks the highest number of virus positive mosquito samples and dead birds confirmed in a single day this season. “West Nile virus activity is now widespread throughout our region,” said Gary Goodman, District Manager. “While this level of activity is not uncommon during the summer months, we are also seeing an increase in the overall number of mosquitoes collected in our surveillance traps,” added Goodman.
 
Areas of concern where much of the West Nile virus activity is currently concentrated include Citrus Heights, Tahoe Park and Arden-Arcade. In Yolo County, virus activity is increasing in Woodland.  “We are closely monitoring these areas through our surveillance program and conducting mosquito control treatments as needed to help protect public health,” emphasized Goodman. The increase in virus activity comes just weeks after Sacramento County reported its first human case of West Nile virus this season.

In the meantime, the District is asking for the public’s cooperation to help reduce the risk of West Nile virus. “If you’re going to be outdoors when mosquitoes are active, don’t take any chances and protect yourself by using an effective insect repellent,” said Goodman. “It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent mosquito bites and reduce your risk of becoming sick.” While most people infected with West Nile virus experience mild or no symptoms, severe illness can occur, particularly among older adults and individuals with underlying medical conditions.
