DRAIN AFTER THE RAIN TO PREVENT MOSQUITOES

Elk Grove, Calif. — Recent rainstorms have left behind standing water throughout Sacramento and Yolo counties, creating ideal conditions for mosquitoes to grow. With warmer temperatures expected in the coming days, the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District is urging residents to take action now and “drain after the rain.”

“Just a small amount of water can produce hundreds of mosquitoes in a matter of days,” said Gary Goodman. “After a rain event, it’s important for residents to walk around their homes and empty anything that can hold water—like buckets, plant saucers, bird baths, and even clogged gutters. Taking a few minutes now can make a big difference in reducing mosquito problems later,” added Goodman.  This message is especially important as invasive mosquitoes, including Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, continue to spread throughout the region. These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters and are capable of transmitting diseases such as Zika, dengue, and chikungunya. First detected within District boundaries in 2019, their populations have expanded rapidly in recent years.

As spring continues, mosquito activity is expected to increase. In addition to eliminating standing water, residents are encouraged to protect themselves by using an EPA-registered insect repellent when spending time outdoors.

To report standing water, request a free home inspection, or receive mosquitofish for ponds or fountains, residents can call 1-800-429-1022 or submit a request online at www.FIGHTtheBITE.net.

The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District provides year round mosquito and vector control services. The main goal for the District is to protect public health by preventing the transmission of diseases and improving the quality of life for all residents.
