FREE MOSQUITO REPELLENT WIPES AVAILABLE FOR
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Personal Protection is Key in Preventing Mosquitoes Bites and West Nile Virus
Elk Grove, Ca— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District is giving away boxes of mosquito repellent towelettes, while supplies last, to communities engaging in outdoor activities in honor of National Night Out next Tuesday, August 6th. The event focuses on crime and drug prevention and many neighborhoods come together for outdoor social gatherings during times of peak mosquito activity. “We know many people will be outside for this event and we want to remind the public that personal protection against mosquitoes is critical in the prevention of West Nile virus,” said Gary Goodman, District Manager. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of the free repellent we are offering as part of our public outreach program,” added Goodman.
This year, West Nile virus activity has been significantly low as compared to other years; however with the hottest weeks of summer remaining, this could quickly change. The District urges the public to protect themselves from mosquito bites when they are outdoors. “Repellent comes in a variety of forms including lotion, spray and towelettes. Find one that you like and use it to ensure you are not bitten by mosquitoes,” said Goodman. Repellent should be applied based on duration and type of activity. Sweat will make the repellent wear off faster and people engaging in physical activity will likely need to apply repellent more often. It’s important to think about using mosquito repellent as often as using sunscreen when spending time outdoors during the summer. Residents should always follow the label directions.

Practice the District D’s of Mosquito Prevention:
DRAIN standing water that may produce mosquitoes.
DAWN and DUSK are times to avoid being outdoors.
DRESS appropriately be wearing long sleeves and pants when outside.
DEFEND yourself by using an effective insect repellent. Make sure to follow label directions!
DOOR and window screens should be in good working condition.
